The Kobayashi family runs this orchard, with "Sakaue" being the name they've used for their business – probably because their home sits just a bit up on a hill.
It was about thirty years ago that they shifted to exclusively growing fruit, after the current owner's father planted a new apple orchard. For generations before that, they raised silkworms, and
also farmed udon, strawberries, asparagus, konjac, and other crops, which they primarily sold through agricultural cooperatives. In 1982, they built a roadside stand at the orchard along Route
120, and that's how they've been doing business ever since. These days, they focus entirely on direct sales and gift orders, no longer sending anything to market. They also produce and process
plums, along with apple juice, apple chips, and dried apples.
